S22 5G – Stuck at “Phone is Loading”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your Samsung Galaxy S22 5G is stuck on a screen that says Phone is Loading, you’re usually dealing with a boot-time crash, a stuck system app, corrupted cache/data, or a faulty update or SIM/security profile.

This guide walks through the fixes in the order that works most often: quick checks, safe mode, cache wipes, SIM/eSIM resets, and deeper recovery steps like factory reset and firmware reflash.

Use it like a checklist—stop once the phone boots normally, and note what changed so you don’t repeat unnecessary steps.

What the error typically means on Galaxy S22 5G

Phone is Loading appears when Android is trying to start core telephony services (SIM/call stack) and related system components. When that component can’t initialize (or gets stuck), the UI can freeze before you fully reach the home screen.

Samsung Galaxy S22, 128GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
  • Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
  • The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
  • For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
  • The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.

On the S22 5G (model families like SM-S901B/SM-S901U and regional variants), the most common triggers are: a recent software update, a failing SIM/eSIM profile, a corrupted system cache, or a third-party app causing a boot loop.

Before you start: quick checks that fix it faster

1) Force-restart the device

Often, the system just needs a clean restart after a crash.

  1. Press and hold Volume Down + Power together.
  2. Keep holding for about 10–20 seconds until the screen turns off and the phone restarts.

2) Remove and re-seat the SIM (or reset the eSIM profile)

If your S22 uses a physical SIM, a bad contact can prevent telephony services from initializing.

  1. Power off the phone.
  2. Eject the SIM tray using the SIM tool.
  3. Remove the SIM, wipe it gently (dry cloth), and re-insert it firmly.
  4. Boot again and see if the loading screen clears.

If you’re on eSIM, you may need carrier steps to re-download or re-activate the profile after a system reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3) Check whether the issue started right after an update

If you updated recently (One UI / security patch), the first attempt should be a cache wipe in Recovery mode (covered below). If the phone is stuck every time, avoid installing new apps until you recover stability.

  • This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
  • This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
  • This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.

Step 1: Boot into Safe Mode (rules out a bad app)

Safe Mode starts Android with only essential apps. If the phone works in Safe Mode, you’ve likely got a third-party app conflict.

  1. Press and hold Power until the power menu appears.
  2. Touch and hold Power off (or Reboot, depending on the prompt) until Safe mode appears.
  3. Tap Safe mode to confirm.

If Safe Mode shows you the home screen normally and the “Phone is Loading” state never repeats, remove recently installed apps—especially dialer/contacts, call recording, spam blockers, VPN, accessibility tools, and device management apps.

Remove the likely culprit apps

  1. Go to Settings → Apps.
  2. Sort by Recently installed (or check the app list manually).
  3. Select suspicious apps and tap Uninstall.

Restart normally afterward.

Step 2: Wipe cache partition (fixes corrupted system cache without deleting your data)

This is the go-to fix for boot problems after updates. It clears the cache partition where system components store temporary data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down together, then press and hold Power.
  3. Keep holding until you see the Samsung logo, then release buttons. You should enter Recovery mode.
  4. Use Volume buttons to highlight Wipe cache partition.
  5. Press Power to confirm.
  6. After it finishes, select Reboot system now.

Try booting normally. If the phone still sticks at “Phone is Loading,” move to the next steps.

Step 3: Reset network settings (targets SIM/telephony handoff issues)

Network resets can fix broken APN profiles, Wi‑Fi calling settings, and some SIM initialization edge cases—without wiping your apps.

  1. Go to Settings → General management.
  2. Tap Reset.
  3. Select Reset network settings.
  4. Confirm and restart when prompted.

If you can’t reach settings due to the loading loop, skip this and use the more direct recovery steps below.

Step 4: Clear the Phone and SIM-related app data (requires you to reach Settings)

If you can get to Settings (even briefly), you can clear telephony-related cache/data. This can help when a system component gets stuck reading corrupted preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → Apps.
  2. Tap Phone (or Phone Services / SIM Toolkit, depending on your build).
  3. Go to Storage.
  4. Tap Clear cache first.
  5. If it still fails, use Clear data (you may need to reconfigure some calling features after reboot).

Reboot afterward.

Step 5: Perform a factory reset (last software step before firmware reflash)

A factory reset wipes app data and system settings that could be preventing telephony services from loading. It’s the step to use when Safe Mode and cache wipes don’t help.

Factory reset from Settings (if you can boot at least once)

  1. Go to Settings → General management → Reset.
  2. Tap Factory data reset.
  3. Review the information, then tap Reset.
  4. Enter your PIN/password if requested.
  5. Confirm and wait for the reboot.

Factory reset from Recovery mode (if the phone won’t reach Settings)

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Boot into Recovery mode (Volume Up + Volume Down + Power, holding until Recovery appears).
  3. Choose Wipe data/factory reset.
  4. Confirm with Yes.
  5. After it finishes, pick Reboot system now.

Step 6: Reflash Samsung firmware (when software is corrupted or the update stuck)

If the device repeatedly gets stuck after resets, a firmware reflash is often the real fix. This replaces corrupted system partitions that cache wipes can’t touch.

The safest path is to use Odin on a Windows PC with the exact firmware build for your S22 5G variant.

Prerequisites

  • PC: Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • USB cable: data-capable cable (avoid flaky chargers)
  • Firmware: correct for your model and region (e.g., SM-S901U vs SM-S901B differ)
  • Battery: at least 50% recommended

High-level process with Odin (don’t skip the model/firmware match)

  1. Download and extract Odin and the matching Samsung firmware package.
  2. Boot the phone into Download Mode (commonly: Power off → hold Volume Down + Volume Up together, then connect USB; follow on-screen prompt).
  3. Open Odin on the PC.
  4. Connect the phone via USB and confirm you see a COM port indicator in Odin.
  5. Load firmware files into the appropriate Odin fields (PDA/AP, CP, CSC, depending on package type).
  6. Keep default Odin options unless the firmware instructions specify changes.
  7. Click Start and wait until it completes.
  8. The phone should reboot. If it doesn’t, wait 10–15 minutes; first boots can take longer after flashing.

Gotcha: Using the wrong region firmware can cause network and telephony issues that look exactly like a “Phone is Loading” loop.

Hardware edge cases (when it’s not software)

Most cases are software, but a few hardware issues can prevent telephony from coming up—especially if the problem appears after a drop, water exposure, or SIM tray impact.

  • SIM reader failure: phone can’t initialize the SIM interface.
  • Moisture damage: even light exposure can affect connections. Don’t charge until fully dry.
  • Board-level fault: repeated boot-loop behavior even after firmware reflash.

If you suspect hardware, test with another working SIM/eSIM profile and consider service support before multiple resets.

Common mistakes that keep the loop going

  • Trying to install apps while the phone is still unstable (a single incompatible app can worsen the boot timing).
  • Wiping only user data but skipping a cache partition wipe after an update.
  • Flashing firmware that doesn’t match your exact model/region.
  • Using a low-quality USB cable that disconnects mid-flash.
  • Resetting network settings repeatedly without addressing a corrupt system component.

FAQs

Will clearing cache or wiping cache partition delete my photos or apps?

No. Wipe cache partition clears temporary system files. It should not erase personal data. A factory reset is what wipes apps and most local data.

How long should the phone stay on Phone is Loading?

After a normal reboot, boot completes typically within a few minutes. If it stays stuck past 10–15 minutes with no progress, treat it as a failure and move to Safe Mode or Recovery cache wipe.

Does Safe Mode work if the phone never finishes booting?

Not reliably. Safe Mode requires reaching the boot state where Android can switch modes. If you get stuck before that, start with Recovery mode → Wipe cache partition.

Can a bad SIM cause this exact issue?

Yes. If the device can’t initialize telephony from the SIM/eSIM, it can stall during “phone services” startup. Testing a different SIM/profile is a smart early diagnostic.

Will firmware flashing break Samsung features or remove my warranty?

Firmware itself usually won’t “break” features, but using unofficial firmware tools can affect warranty terms depending on region and service policy. Stick to the exact official firmware for your model/region and avoid unnecessary experimental steps.

Bottom Line

When a Galaxy S22 5G is stuck on Phone is Loading, start with a forced restart, then remove/re-seat the SIM and test Safe Mode. If it still won’t boot normally, go to Recovery and wipe the cache partition before escalating to factory reset and—if needed—a correct Odin firmware reflash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If none of the software steps resolve it, test another SIM/eSIM profile and consider hardware service, especially if you recently had water exposure, a drop, or SIM tray damage.
